Measurement Tool
The measurement tool lets you measure distances directly in the 3D scene. Click two or more points โ on surfaces, projector lenses, object edges, or free space โ and Experience Designer draws a labelled dimension line showing the distance in metres.
Activating the measurement tool
- Click the Measure button in the toolbar, or press M.
The cursor changes and the HUD at the bottom of the viewport shows measurement status.
Taking a measurement
- Activate the tool.
- Click a start point in the viewport. A dot and a snap indicator appear.
- Move the mouse โ a live preview line shows the current distance.
- Click the end point to finalise the measurement.
- The distance label is drawn at the midpoint of the line.
Chain measurements
By default, the tool is in chain mode: after placing the end point, the next click starts a new segment from that same point. This lets you measure a series of connected distances (e.g., projector spacing along a truss) in one session.
Double-click or press Esc to finish the current chain and leave measurement mode.
Close loop
Press O while measuring to turn closed-loop mode on or off. When enabled, double-click to finish and add a final segment back to the first point. Pressing Esc finishes without closing the loop.
Snap modes
The measurement tool snaps to geometry to give you accurate results:
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| None | Measure freely without snapping |
| Edge | Snap to edge midpoints |
| Vert | Snap to object bounding-box corners |
| BBox | Snap to bounding-box corners, edges, centres, and useful object points such as projector lenses |
Choose a mode from the Measure menu. While measuring, hold V, E, or F to temporarily use vertex, edge, or free placement. Press P to cycle the snap-priority order.
Axis constraints
Use the axis buttons in the Measure menu, or hold X, Y, or Z while placing a point. Releasing the key returns to free measurement.
Managing measurements
- Click an existing measurement label to select it.
- Press Backspace while measuring to undo the last segment.
- Select a completed measurement and press Delete to remove it.
- All measurements are saved with the project.
Place projector at measurement point
Select a measurement point and use its projector action to add a projector at that exact position.
