Measurement Tool

The measurement tool lets you measure distances directly in the 3D scene. Click two or more points โ€” on surfaces, projector lenses, object edges, or free space โ€” and Experience Designer draws a labelled dimension line showing the distance in metres.

Activating the measurement tool

  • Click the Measure button in the toolbar, or press M.

The cursor changes and the HUD at the bottom of the viewport shows measurement status.

Taking a measurement

  1. Activate the tool.
  2. Click a start point in the viewport. A dot and a snap indicator appear.
  3. Move the mouse โ€” a live preview line shows the current distance.
  4. Click the end point to finalise the measurement.
  5. The distance label is drawn at the midpoint of the line.

Chain measurements

By default, the tool is in chain mode: after placing the end point, the next click starts a new segment from that same point. This lets you measure a series of connected distances (e.g., projector spacing along a truss) in one session.

Click Finish Chain (or press Enter) to end the chain and deselect.

Close loop

Enable Close Loop in the toolbar to automatically draw a closing segment back to the first point, creating a complete polygon measurement (useful for measuring room perimeters).

Snap modes

The measurement tool snaps to geometry to give you accurate results:

Snap type Visual indicator Description
Vertex Yellow circle Nearest mesh vertex
Edge Cyan circle Nearest edge midpoint
Centre Pink circle Object bounding-box centre
Lens Green circle Projector lens origin
Bounding box Orange circle Nearest bounding-box face point
Grid Green square Nearest grid intersection

Use Tab to cycle through snap priority presets:

  • Preset 1: Lens โ†’ Vertex โ†’ Centre โ†’ Edge
  • Preset 2: Edge โ†’ Vertex โ†’ Centre โ†’ Lens

Toggle snapping on/off with Shift + S.

Axis constraints

While measuring, press X, Y, or Z to lock the measurement to that world axis. A guideline appears to show the constraint direction. Press the same key again to release the constraint.

Managing measurements

  • Click an existing measurement label to select it.
  • Delete / Backspace to remove a selected measurement.
  • Ctrl / Cmd + Z to undo the last measurement segment.
  • All measurements are saved with the project.

Place projector at measurement point

When a measurement marker is selected, a context button Place Projector Here appears. Click it to add a new projector at the exact measurement point โ€” useful for confirming projector positions match architectural dimensions.
